Oscar Mulberry

$19

Notes

Juicy, balanced acid + sweetness, delightful.

About the Fruit

We get these mulberries from our friend Holly Flora, a brilliant florist who builds many of her arrangements directly from her farm in Ojai. The farm also contains established Oscar mulberries which we patiently await every year in order to make this brilliant and rare jam. Such a decadent ruby fruit preserved at its finest moment, a moment that is quite fleeting due to the fickle nature of this varietal. It's that time-in-a-bottle quality that drives us to attempt to preserve these tricky rarities year after year.

Origins

The Oscar mulberry is the child of a low tech cross breeding done by naturalist Oscar Clark in Riverside, CA (making them a local!). It comes from indigenous stock, with one of its parents being the red mulberry (Moris Rubra) that is native to North America.

The Moris Rubra was used by many indigenous peoples including the Muskogee and Cherokee, for a variety of foods and tools including mulberry dumplings made with cornmeal, and bows made with mulberry branches.

Ingredients
Oscar mulberries, *cane sugar, *lemon juice

*Certified Organic
