We're glad that Jill Bernheimer left her career as a film executive. For the selfish fact that Bernheimer offers LA residence a chance to experience her considered taste for producers who work their land honestly under the roof of her refreshingly designed store on Melrose. This level of accountability, coupled with the lack of pretension in the service, offers the customer a chance to lower his or her defenses and just enjoy one of the most pleasant wine-shopping experiences in Los Angeles.

At Short Cake you'll find parfaits with strawberry and thyme preserve cut with seasonal compote, sandwiches with fresh cheese and tomato and coriander jam, and fall butters lathered on shortcake bars. Jams and pickles will be available retail - a hub for the best of what Sqirl offers.

Brooklyn Slate Company is a collaborative effort from Brooklyn graphic designer Sean Tice and Parsons graduate student Kristy Hadeka. After visiting Kristy's family slate quarry in upstate New York in the spring of 2009, the two grabbed a few pieces for use as all purpose boards back home in Brooklyn. They found a number of purposes for the slate - as trivets for tea kettles and hot dishes to coasters for beers - and began gifting pieces to friends. The response was so overwhelmingly positive that the two struck out to produce a line of slate products.
